It is a sandbox-based isolation software for 32- and 64-bit Windows NT-based operating systems. Sophos acquired Sandboxie from Invincea, which had previously acquired it from the original author, Ronen Tzur.
Sandboxie was developed by Sophos for application virtualization and later released as open source (see also Sandboxie is now Open Source and this GitHub project).
